I almost want to gatekeep this place, so it won’t be busy the next time I go. But… let’s talk about Hippie Fish – a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant and rooftop bar overlooking Pererenan Beach in Bali.

Hippie Fish is my new favourite spot for sunset dining in Bali for 3 reasons:

It’s in an up & coming location on the island

Pererenan is a 5-minute motorbike ride from Canggu and it’s one of my favourite places to stay in Bali. The current villas and food spots in Pererenan are a little more luxe. Of course, there are plenty of tourists here already, but I like that there are less unnecessary shops (for now) so it doesn’t feel as commercial like Seminyak. Give it another 2 years and it will probably be just as crowded as Canggu – so the time to visit is now.

Watching the sunset at Pererenan is a vibe. It’s great to sit back and watch both tourists and locals (and the dogs!) enjoy the beach and ocean as the sun goes down. That’s actually how we discovered Hippie Fish – while riding the motorbike along the beach. The last time we were in Bali in September 2022, the building wasn’t even complete yet.

It has incredible tapas for seafood lovers

Most people seem to only stick at Hippie Fish’s rooftop bar to watch the sunset over a few drinks, but we decided to have dinner here and I’m so glad we did! Being a pescatarian, I had so many choices.

We ordered a few things on the menu to share:

  • Fritto Misto (small fried seafood bites)
  • Grilled calamari
  • Tuna steak
  • Charred veggies
  • Juices and sparkling water

I loved that they focused on the flavours of the seafood itself, without adding powerful flavours – that’s how you know the seafood is fresh. The tuna was cooked perfectly.

The only downside is that since it’s a rooftop bar, the drinks menu doesn’t have many non-alcoholic options. You can get fresh juices, soda and sparkling water – but that’s about it. It would be nice to see more non-alcoholic options like smoothies and mocktails, but it’s a bar, after all.

It has cosy and chilled vibes without the noisy drunks

I really like Hippie Fish because it’s on the smaller side. I’m not a fan of the big beach clubs, where you feel like everyone is getting drunk off their faces and you’re talking on top of each other.

It’s a space where you can dress up or down, but I would dress a little nicer to respect the vibes for everyone. Think casual smart during summer.

Honestly, watching the sunset is beautiful from almost anywhere on the island, but a sunset dinner at Hippie Fish is now definitely on my must-do list for every time I’m in Bali.

PS. Because it’s a smaller rooftop bar and it’s fast becoming a new ‘it’ spot, make a booking if you’d like a table facing the ocean. Here’s their Instagram @hippiefishbali – check out their tagged photos for more food photos.
