Have you noticed that bagels have become a bougie menu item at cafes all over Sydney? I was craving a salmon bagel the other day and since I work from home, there was nothing stopping me from making it happen.

Check out my Reel or TikTok for a quick ASMR recap on how I made my smoked salmon bagel.

Just like my focaccia sando, you can hear the crunch of my first bite! 😱

Ingredients

I’m pretty sure everyone has their own version, but my salmon bagel had 7 key items:

  • Fresh bagels 🥯 🥯
  • 1 packet of smoked salmon
  • Cream cheese spread
  • Lettuce
  • Cucumber 🥒
  • Red onion
  • Capers

P.S. Smoked salmon can get pretty salty, so you could substitute the capers for something sweeter like sliced pickles.

You can buy bagels from anywhere these days, but I wanted to try the ones from my local bakery (Goodwood Bakeshop) in Marrickville. The ‘everything’ seasoning on top is so good, that I just mix it back inside the filling. None of it gets wasted!

Making your own bougie salmon bagel

Step 1: Toast the bagel

Sliced up the bagels and toast them for about 2 minutes. Warm bread is my absolute favourite thing on this planet, but you can totally leave them as is.

Step 2: Prep your fillings

Gather 2-3 large lettuce leaves and cut a cucumber to about 15cm. Peel the cucumber, and then use the peeler to create thin cucumber ribbons.

If you can’t be bothered, you can just slice up the cucumber like normal. Dry the cucumber ribbons and set aside.

Cut a red onion into some thin slices, then drain some capers.

Step 3: Schmear it up

Once your bagels are toasted, schmear your cream cheese spread on all of the insides.

Step 4: Add the rest of your fillings

On your bagel bottoms, start layering your lettuce, cucumber ribbons, smoked salmon, onion slices and capers.

Finish off with some salt and pepper or if you’re like me, pour the rest of your ‘everything seasoning’ on top.

The colours are going to look great and your bougie bagel is ready.
