It’s been a while since I’ve tried something new, so my boyfriend recently booked us a beginners ‘Coffee & Clay’ workshop at Clay Sydney.
This is a great activity to do in Sydney! While I love a good cafe brunch or farmer’s market, the workshop is a nice way to mix up your weekend routine without throwing it off track. 👌
You’ll be having fun while feeling like you’ve done something productive in a good way. And since it’s only 2 hours long, you can still easily fit in your cafe and market visits before or after.
You can check out my Reels and TikTok recaps for this workshop.
Edit: I mentioned Class Bento in my videos, but I realised we booked directly on Clay Sydney’s website. Though, I’m keen to try out some of Class Bento’s activities too…
General deets
The workshop is hosted every Saturday at Clay Sydney’s Enmore studio. It starts at 10:30am and we were the first people to show up (keen much?), so we had a look around the studio. It’s a super cute and inspiring space, but it is a studio with working stations, so obviously it’s ok to look and admire, but DON’T TOUCH.

On the website, it says that you can BYO your own coffees and treats, but I highly recommend just bringing coffees and no food. You’ll be too busy getting your hands dirty, so just grab a bite beforehand.
Experience
We were guided throughout the steps to make a small vessel – think a mug, vase or planter.
This might be a beginner’s class, but heads up – it’s way harder than it looks! My boyfriend and I both chose to make vases for our devils ivy plants at home. It was a humbling experience.
Mine turned out like a tree trunk shape, because I honestly could not make it into anything else.
Let’s just say I’m glad that the irregular/imperfect trend is still a thing in homewares.
At the end of the workshop, we hand our creations over so they can be fired up. They’ll be ready to pick after 3 weeks.
Vibes
Being a shared experience, there will be other people who booked the workshop, but the vibes are casual and friendly. There are 3 large tables so you’ll be sharing your space with 4-5 other people. It’s hard to not have a good laugh when you’re struggling to make a clump of clay work!

You should try this Coffee & Clay workshop if you’re looking for:
- A unique date – they even have a Wine & Clay workshop if you prefer an evening sesh!
- A fun thing to do with friends or family (better for older kids)
- A birthday or hen’s activity
- A solo creative session – even though I was there with my boyfriend, I was honestly so focused on making my vase that we barely talked to each other! So you definitely won’t feel out of place even if you’re by yourself.
Extra things to note
It’s only a 2-hour workshop, but the tables are tall so you’ll be standing the entire time. This was totally fine for us, since we had our sneakers. There are some chairs there, but you might have to let them know if you need one.
Lastly, if you haven’t worked with clay before, don’t bother getting ambitious with crazy ideas since you’ll be making a basic and small item. Most of the amazing ceramics you see online are usually created by wheel and take years to master, or with a mould. So chances are, you won’t be able to make it in a 2-hour beginners class. Just go with the flow and have fun.
